Golden Oldies Thursday: Valentines

13 February 2014

I haven't been able to take part in Golden Oldies Thursday for a while because I've been super busy.  Crumpet's Nail Tarts are doing a Valentine's Day theme this week so I thought I'd join in.

My manicure is very simple.  I used Lac Attack's Amortentia from her Magical Musing's collection.  I love love her polish, they were the first indies I ever bought.  It's a beautiful pink glitter topper and finished off with a silver heart stud on my pointers.

Tri-Polish Tuesday: February Week 2

11 February 2014

I love love love splatter nails - they're a regular occurrence on this blog and they're so easy to do as well.  The clean up is the biggest job but I do love the satisfaction of making a massive mess with my manicure then cleaning it up really well.

So I had to involve splatter into at least one of my Tri-Polish Tuesday manicures.  And here is the first attempt.  This is with the same colours I used last week.  I used the brown first, then the pink before finishing up with the grey.

I really love these, they're super effective and look like I've spent a lot of time on them (when actually I didn't!)

Tri-Polish Tuesday: February Week 1

04 February 2014

A new month, a new set of polishes to work with.  This month we have to use Brown, Pink and Grey in our manicures.  The colours I have picked for the month (although they don't have to be the same, my OCD makes me use the same) are China Glaze Foies Gras, an OPI pink that I forget the name of and Sally Hansen Dorian Grey.

The manicure I decided to do this week was inspired by My Mint Nail's beautiful mosaic style manicure she posted about the other day.  They were stunning and I really wanted to have a go.

So here are my results:

They were quite easy to do but took a while and I love that they look so complicated.  I painted my nails with two coats of Dorian Grey.  Once this was completely dry I drew random lines all over my nails with my white Barry M nail art pen.  I filled in sections using the other two polishes using a tiny nail art brush and once these were completely dry I went over the lines again.

Once I tidied up the manicure, I topped it with two coats of Poshe.

There's only one day left to enter my giveaway, so don't forget!

Tri-Polish Tuesday: January Week 3

28 January 2014

This is my final January Tri-Polish Tuesday manicure, so the final time I'll be using Red, Yellow and Orange.  I wanted to do something special so I decided to go for a fiery manicure.

I painted every nail bar my thumb and pointer with China Glaze Stone Cold from their Hunger Games range.  I then free-handed the flames using the same Red, Yellow and Orange that I've used throughout January - Ciate's Boudoir and Hopscotch and Barry M's Limited Edition Yellow.

Once my freehand flames were finished, I used a small brush dipped in acetone to try and make them look wispy.  I then highlighted the base of the flames using China Gaze's Electricity - also from their Hunger Games range.  I finished the whole manicure off with two coats of Poshe.

Golden Oldies Thursday: Blue

23 January 2014

The rules of Golden Oldies is that we must use a polish that is at least 1 year old.  According to my Time Hop - this polish was ordered exactly one year ago, so I think it counts!

Lac Attack was the launch of my love for Indie Polishes.  I stayed up this time one year ago for a restock to make sure I could get my hands on her Magical Musings set after seeing them over on Nailasaurus and because of my love of Harry Potter (of course).

Durmstang is a fantastic blue that I don't give enough credit for.  It's a rich, metallically blue that has shards of black in them.  The polish applies really well.  My results are 3 coats of Durmstrang over two coats of white and two top coats of Poshe (which I love love love).

(P.S Did you know I'm having a giveaway?  Enter here!)

Tri-Polish Tuesday: January Week 2

21 January 2014

So I accidentally missed last week's Tri-Polish Tuesday because I went to see Priscilla, Queen of the Desert the Tuesday night.  Although the nails were all painted, I didn't get home in time to write about them.  It's saved me having to do a manicure this week though, so really it's all worked out fine!

I used exactly the same polishes as I did last time around (here's my last post here - with a reminder of the rules).  These were Barry M Limited Edition Yellow and Ciate Boudoir and Hopscotch.  I also used white this time around.

So I applied two coats of Barry M's White then once it was dry, used masking tape then sponged a gradient over.  This worked in some places but not in others!  After cleaning up, I applied two coats of insta-dry!

I love this effect but I wish it looks like a gradient on all the nails.  Also, the masking tape didn't quite work and blurred some of the lines.  I tried to top this up with my Barry M nail art pen to make it look neater.  Has anyone got any better alternatives?

You may have noticed I have a new look blog.  I really love it but I'd also love to get your feedback!  Let me know what you think! :-)

Golden Oldies Thursday: Stripes

16 January 2014

So this week's Golden Oldies Thursday challenge is Stripes.  I was determined to join in this week after failing at the Tri-Polish challenge.  I went to watch Priscilla, Queen of the Desert Tuesday so I think I can be forgiven!

If you're not clued up on the Golden Oldies Thursday challenge - a reminder of the rules can be found here.

I had a dig through my stash and found a couple of Avon polishes.

These are called Sea Breeze and Lemon Sugar.  They're lovely colours but I bought them ages ago and don't use them very often because they're very thin and need quite a few coats to make them work.

So here is my stripe manicure.  I painted my nails Sea Breeze with an accent of Lemon Sugar then striped the accent and middle finger with alternate colours.  I freehanded these stripes.

Golden Oldies Thursday: Pink

09 January 2014

Another day, another new nail polish challenge.  This is another of Crumpet's Nail Tarts challenges - Golden Oldies Thursday.

The rules are simple:
  • The polish you use should be at least one year old.
  • If you haven't been a polishaholic that long, you can use the older polishes you have
  • The polish should be previously used, but if you're stuck, you could free a yearling from Mount Untried
  • You can use more than 1 polish as long as it fits the theme and the rules.
So this week's challenge is pink.  I had a long look at my stash and finally spotted an OPI pink that has been there for so long, it's got wrinkles.  It's called Sparrow Me the Drama from the Pirates of the Caribbean range.  So actually, the polish is from 2011 which makes it super old!  I also found a tub of flocking powder which, although it's quite old.

I thought I'd do some fancy nail art with the flocking powder and striping tape.  I applied two coats of Sparrow Me the Drama then Insta-Dry over the top.  Once it dried I applied the striping tape in random patterns then added another layer of Insta-dry then the flocking powder.  But, by the time I'd applied the flocking powder, patted it down and got rid of any excess, the polish was too dry and it was very difficult to get rid of the tape without ruining the design.

So my nails looked like a muppet that had been mauled.  But I thought I'd share the pictures anyway, just so you can have a laugh!

Everyone else has done some fantastic designs so you should go and take a look.

Tri-Polish Tuesday: January Week 1

07 January 2014

Last year I was involved in a year long challenge, which I mostly managed to complete.  This year, I've tried to look for something that's not so limiting and will help encourage me to try different things and designs.  So I joined the Crumpet's Nail Tarts facebook group and decided to take part in their challenges.

The first one this year is the Tri-Polish Tuesday challenge.  The rules are pretty simple:

  • Post every Tuesday (although you don't have to post every week) starting 7th January.
  • Three colours will be chosen for each month and you post up to four manis using those three colours, plus the allowed extra colours of black, white, silver, gold and glitter toppers.
  • You don't have to stick to the same three polishes for the whole month, as long as you stick to the three chosen colours and allowed extras.
  • At least one mani must contain all three colours, while the others must contain at least two of the chosen colours.
So easy peasy!

This month's colours are Red, Orange and Yellow.  I've got loads of ideas for this month but I'd thought I'd start off with a simple dotticure.  I used Barry M's Limited Edition Yellow, then Ciate Boudoir and Hopscotch from my advent calendar.  I forgot to take a photo of the yellow - oops!

I applied two coats of Barry M White as a base then used a dotting tool to dot the different colours.  I was going to do all shapes and sizes and patterns but they just kind of happened this way and I kind of like it!
